Meet Cake: this is Davy

We’re a fully remote team of about 20 people spread across 3 countries, all working together to build Cake and improve the financial well-being of every consumer. Meet the people behind Cake in this blog series. Today, it’s up to Davy, Data Scientist.

Name: Davy Cielen
Age: 42
Role: Data Scientist

Tell us about your workspace picture

The picture above is taken at home. I don’t have a specific place where I prefer to work though. Before corona most often I went to a city nearby and just looked for a place to work.

But actually my favorite workplace is standing in front of a classroom.

The picture below is taken at RWTH Aachen (Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule), one of the largest universities in Europe.

Me teaching at RWTH Aachen

I work as a freelancer. Besides Cake I also work for the Business Analytics Institute Europe (BAI). BAI offers training programs for managers and engineers to learn how to transform data into impactful decisions for their organizations and their customers.

Several times a year I teach for the BAI. My subjects include AI, data sciences, business analytics and big data. This teaching is usually concentrated in intensive periods of two or three weeks at different locations around the world. In the coming year I would normally go to India (SDMIMD, Mysore), Bayonne (for ZHAU Zurich) and Grenoble (IAE). But with corona this all remains very unsure.🤞

This combination works perfectly for me. It means making many hours and long days, but it gives me a lot of variation. This way I also stay fully up to date with the latest developments within my field of expertise. And I bring that knowledge back to Cake.

Since “Craft your own cubicle” is one of Cake’s core company values I’m hoping to return, after corona, to a more nomad lifestyle within Europe.

I tend to travel as much as I can. Then I work during the day, have a local lunch and discover the city by night. One of the places I often stay is Bayonne. I teach there every year. And in the process I’ve really fallen in love with this French region.

What do you do at Cake?

I work with the Data Science team, together with Jessica, Mo, Thomas and Nick. If you want to read more about what we are doing you must definitely also read this interview

I focus on making sure that the incoming anonymised bank transactions of all Cake users are getting automatically enriched with features such as the merchant name, category and place.

Banking transactions contain all the information you need to gain a solid insight into your income and spending. Only not in a clear way. So enriching and organizing the banking transactions is the very first step in improving the financial health of our users. It all starts with understanding where your money is going before you can start improving your behaviour.

Why Cake and not another company?

I saw a post on Linkedin and reached out to Jessica. We met and I immediately clicked with the mission of Cake to improve the financial wellbeing of the everyday consumer. I really love the fact that there is a social aspect to this job.

When I met the team, first the management team and then my colleagues, I was sold. I knew I would be spending a long time at Cake.

And if that was not enough yet, we are also working with new technologies and management techniques. Cake has a very dynamic atmosphere which is the opposite of a large company feeling.

What’s your most memorable Cake moment?

Can I answer “every day”? 😀

I have to name one, I would go for our day out in Antwerp beginning of this year. That day we went to a cocktail bar, where we also invited some of the early Cake users who were part of our closed beta group. Not only we had great food and drinks, the conversations with the first real users of the app were real eye-openers.

What’s your favorite cake?

Cake the company, of course. 😂

I barely eat cake but if I have to name one, it would probably be carrot cake. 🍰🥕

Are you ready to download the Cake app? It’s available for Google Play and on the App Store.
