We’re a fully remote team of about 25 people spread across 3 countries, all working together to build Cake and improve the financial well-being of every consumer. Meet the people behind Cake in this blog series. Today, it’s up to Jens.

Tell us about your workspace picture
In the picture you can see a part of the living room that has been transformed into my office space. Because of Corona, I have been working from home since last year. But now that I have started working at Cake, this will become my permanent workplace. As Cake doesn’t have an office at all.😅
On my desk, there are a number of things that reveal what I’m into, work-related or not. The row of different smartphones are there for my work.😎
In my spare time I enjoy photography a lot. Most of all I like to take pictures with my drone. I also take it with me on long walks. That way I can enjoy the photos and video footage afterwards. This allows me to experience my walks twice: once from the ground and once from the air!
If I’m not outside I keep myself busy inside building LEGO or watching series. Lots of series!
What do you do at Cake?
I work as a Communication, Support & Testing Engineer. That’s quite a mouthful.
More concretely, I answer help desk questions, together with Emilie. This is mainly done via chat. So if you ask a question in the app (via the menu at the top right), chances are it will end up with me.
But I also keep an eye on our social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, and answer questions from users there as well. I also follow up on the reviews that come in on Google Play and the Appstore. I then take the feedback that comes in and put it to work.
At Cake, we also work with an open roadmap. Everyone can follow which new developments are planned for the app. But users can also make their own suggestions or vote on ideas that others have put forward. I keep the roadmap up-to-date and ensure that all suggestions are also discussed internally.
I also test our app and website. Mainly when new features are added. Then I check if everything works as it should and if it doesn’t break anything else.
I like to keep myself busy with many different things that are somehow linked to each other. That works perfectly in this role.✔
Why Cake and not another company?
Although I am new to Cake I have been using the app for over a year. I have always found the concept behind the app interesting. So to be able to now participate in this and think about how the app can be improved and attract even more users is a lot of fun.
I also noticed that Cake is an easy conversation starter. I’m pretty active on Twitter and when something is posted about Cake, it always triggers a lot of interaction.
It’s just nice to work on a product that can be used by anyone. And for which you are even rewarded for using it!
What is your first impression after your first week at Cake?
I have noticed that I have joined a team with a tremendous amount of knowledge.
It’s impressive, and sometimes overwhelming, as a newbie to hear and see what goes on behind the scenes to optimize the app’s user experience.
The team has a broad knowledge of the product, so asking a question usually quickly yields answers from several people at once. Everyone is really helpful! This allowed me to get off to a flying start right away!
What’s your favorite cake?
Cheesecake. Without a doubt!
Any topping on the Cake?
Gosh not necessarily. Strawberry always goes well with it though!
